This exhibition is about different stories
that have common links. The collection of images in this show
emerged from three short stories written separately by the artists.
This show tells more than one story but finds parallels that
connect all of them together.
Artists Sandra A. Moreno and Enrique Fernández Cervantes
have a strong interest in literature and storytelling. In addition
to being visual artists, they have both written short stories
and poetry in Spanish. Literary works are often an inspiration
and an integral part of the artists’ creative process.
In the summer of 2004, Sandra and Enrique decided to write a
series of short stories that served as the foundation for the
Historias Fragmentadas (Fragmented Stories) exhibition. Both
artists wrote their stories separately after agreeing to share
some common elements and characters in their writings. The artists
came up with a list of words that were descriptive of things
such as people, colors, places, objects and emotions. Each artist
selected a number of words from the final list and used them
in their writings and artwork. They made certain that they both
had selected at least a few words in common. Using at least
a few shared words guaranteed that there would be some parallels
in the stories written by the two artists. The exhibition itself
gives the viewers an opportunity to discover the parallels and
interweaving similarities that link together the stories and
the art created for this project.
Every person, artist or not, has many stories to tell. Many
are trying to say the same thing as others without even realizing
it. Each voice is different and therefore every story told appears
to be different in the surface. Underneath it all, however,
there is an infinite number of parallels and common links that
we all share. Those parallels keep all of those who have stories
to tell connected in many ways.
Sandra A. Moreno based her paintings on her two short stories,
“Sueño de un Escritor” (The Writer’s
Dream) and “Miradas Perdidas” (Empty Gazes). Sandra
is a painter from Michoacán, México, who lives
in Wylie, Texas. She works primarily with acrylic paint and
mixed media. Enrique Fernández Cervantes created color
photographs that were inspired by his short story “Las
Hojas Rojas que Caen del Cielo” (Red Leaves Falling from
the Sky). Enrique is a painter, art photographer and exhibition
curator from Mexico City who currently lives in Dallas, Texas.
